Teeth whitening is becoming an increasingly popular cosmetic dental procedure here in Northern Ireland as it is a great way to restore your teeth's natural look. With more and more people seeking stunning white teeth, there are a number of questions that many patients will have. Below are the answers to some common questions that you may have around teeth whitening. What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is as it sounds – it's the process of lightening the colour of your teeth to try and achieve a more natural looking white finish. This is achieved through a bleaching process that can be carried out either at home using a home teeth whitening kit, or with the help of a qualified professional dentist. Why might you need teeth whitening?
There are a number of reasons for patients to consider teeth whitening. One of the most popular reasons is a desire for our teeth to return to their natural colour. As is the case with your hair, skin and bones, teeth age with time and as we get older they will naturally age. This leads to a discolouring of the teeth and is a reason for many people to choose teeth whitening.
Your teeth can also become discoloured if they are not looked after correctly. This staining can come about by foods and drink including coffee, wine and blackcurrant or through smoking.
The recent celebrity culture has somewhat glamourised teeth whitening, and as the procedure becomes quicker and more affordable, more and more adults are choosing to have their teeth whitened for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, graduations or even Christmas parties. What teeth whitening procedures are offered at Blue Sky Dentistry?
We offer two types of teeth whitening procedures here at Blue Sky. These are power teeth whitening and home teeth whitening.1. Power Teeth Whitening
Power teeth whitening is a professional teeth whitening procedure in which your teeth get whitened in the dental chair. A protective barrier is placed on your gums and lips, and a gel is placed on your teeth. A lamp is then positioned over your teeth and this activates the bleaching process. After one hour you can expect your teeth to look a few shades brighter and this is a popular choice with many patients who have an important event coming up where they want to look their best.2. Home Teeth Whitening
Home teeth whitening is where our dental team custom-make a lightweight plastic mouth mould for you that fits snugly over your teeth. You then put a whitening gel inside this mould and wear it at night or for a few hours during the day. Results can normally be seen after two weeks and your teeth will also appear whiter and brighter.
Who should carry out teeth whitening procedures?
You should only visit a registered dental professional for teeth whitening. Some beauticians and beauty salons may offer teeth whitening despite not being qualified so be sure to avoid these methods. It's always best (and safest) to consult your dentist and choose a registered dentist for your teeth whitening needs.
What about home teeth whitening kits?
In general, unless it has been provided by your dentist, you should avoid home teeth whitening kits. While they can seem very appealing due to the cost, the moulds won't fit around your teeth as well as they should and this can sometimes result in some of the bleaching solution falling out and damaging your gums and tooth enamel. If you want to use a home teeth whitening kit, consult your dentist.
Is teeth whitening permanent?
Unfortunately teeth whitening isn't permanent, although depending how well you look after your teeth you can get anything from a few months to a number of years out of your teeth whitening procedure. How long it lasts varies from person to person, but generally the better you look after your teeth the longer they will remain white.
Are there any risks to teeth whitening?
There is always a risk with teeth whitening as your gums may become sensitive to the chemicals used in the bleaching solution. Professional teeth whitening solutions from a dentist are always the safest while home whitening kits are more likely to harm your gums and teeth.
What should you do to look after your teeth following teeth whitening?
The best way to look after your teeth following teeth whitening is to watch what you eat and drink. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and cut down on drinks like coffee and alcohol that can stain your teeth. If you're a regular smoker, try to cut down your smoking to avoid quick staining of your teeth.
Two ways to ensure you maintain healthy, white teeth are:
- Brush your teeth morning and night and also after your main meal using a fluoride toothpaste.
- Visit your dentist on a regular basis to get a check-up and a professional dentist clean.
